Day 10 & 11 - Beauty of the North and Host Shabbat

Greetings friends and family! The last two days have been beautiful, full of great weather and memorable experiences. On Friday, we woke up in the north, at Kibbutz Ashdot Ya'akov, packed a lunch and enjoyed a beautiful view of the Kineret during our tefillah at the top of Mt. Arbel. Afterward, the whole group hiked down the steep mountain, supporting each other along the way and sharing stories about their homes. Following our morning of scenic views, we took students to meet up with their host families for the weekend. Eden and Liz even had a chance to meet up with alumna Ariel Goldman (class of '16) in Tel Aviv. She greeted us in her Class of 2016 Israel Trip sweatshirt! We both enjoyed seeing her and learning about her fascination high school experience living and studying at Naale Elite Academy, an international high school in Israel.  She's sends a big "shalom" to her classmates and everyone back at CCJDS.

Today, we met back up with our amazing group of eighth graders and learned about their incredible host weekend experiences. Below are a few highlights they shared.

We went to a family Shabbat, and everyone went around and shared something interesting they did over the last week. We also got to sleep a lot and eat a delicious Israeli breakfast. - Simone and Kesenia

We got to play basketball with 12 other Israeli kids, and ate a delicious Israeli lunch! It was an incredible weekend, one of the highlights of the trip so far!" - Abe C, Ezra, and Charlie.

Day 7 - Shvil hasalat, Mitspe Ramon, and Shitafon!

Happy Tuesday! Today we woke up at 6:30 and had an amazing breakfast. Then, we went to Shvil hasalat, an amazing produce farm where we toured greenhouses and ate lots of good fruits and veggies such as tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries and more. It was pretty incredible to see the fresh produce being grown in the desert and Israel's drip irrigation, a system invented in Israel. This tasty experience allowed us to see first hand how Israelis have made the "desert bloom." Following our organic appetizers, we had a falafel lunch and visited a makolet. As our lunch came to an end, some rain came through so we ran to the bus. Our ride through the desert got even more exciting when it began to snow! Yes - snow in the desert! We soon reached our destination, a space museum and visitor center, the Ilan Ramon Museum and Memorial in Mitzpe Ramon. There, we learned about the first Israeli to ever go to space, Ilan Ramon. Day 8 - Mystics of the Galil

Happy Hump Day! Although we did not ride camels today, we did get to enjoy several other interesting and fun activities. First off, we packed up the bus, ate a lovely breakfast, and headed off to the gravesite of David and Pola Ben-Gurion for a scenic and spiritual Tefillah. After, we drove from the desert to the lush green hills and valleys of the north. For lunch, we did a supermarket sweep -- the teachers divided us into groups of five, gave us 135 shekels, and sent us off to purchase a picnic lunch for our group.  Following several Mekupelet candy bars and containers of hummus, our adventure brought us to the mystical city of Safed or in Hebrew:  צְפַת. We explored the famous alleys and heard stories of the majestic blue city, which is so high up in the mountains it seemed as if we were walking on the clouds. Day 2 - Digging for our Roots!

Hello, we are today's leaders of the day, Ezra and Kesenia. Today was a very exciting day that included digging and celebrating our Jewish roots. We started the day with a visit to a nearby Yeshiva, and two of the members of PJA read Torah! The Tefillah leaders were also exceptional and enlightened the room. Following the Yeshiva, we put on our archeologist hats and traveled to Beit Guvrin, an ancient site where the Maccabees once dwelled. We excavated the remains of the houses that once stood over 2,000 years ago. Through the pouring rain, the students adventured to a separate cave system, one that was untouched and lit by candlelight. We then journeyed on to a separate world, the Israeli shopping center. Students ate at authentic Israeli restaurants in the food court like "Big Apple Pizza" and "McDonald's".
